santorum for the republican nomination. he didn't get a bounce after he picked paul ryan or after the convention, but he is after this debate. so we are seeing a lot of movement right now, but i think the best gauge of where this race will be is when we move on a week or two from now where we see where all the dust settled after a volatile period in the numbers. >> i thought you were going to say when our new nbc news poll comes out that's what we know. with that said the pugh poll says if the election were held today, that's 49/45 amongst likely voters. amongst registered voters barack obama 46%, mitt romney 46%. the gallup daily tracking likely voters, obama 47, romney 49. if you can keep up up at this point, 49/46. the state polls caught your eye as well, michigan in particular. you look at those numbers. >> right. in the michigan poll it was a survey that had president obama holding onto a narrow three-point lead down from a 10--point lead earlier last month. that poll was kind of what we saw. i was talking to a republican looking at all the polling numbers and races who said,

is really clear. we're giving people a clear choice. >> paul ryan was asked about the tax cuts for the millionaires proposed by romney and ryan's budget plans. he was a guest on fox news sunday with chris wallace and the vice presidential candidate made some missteps of his own. >> how much would it cost? >> it's revenue neutral. >> i'm just talking about -- the cut in tax rates. >> the cut in tax rates is lowered for all americans by 20%. it's revenue neutral. >> it's not unless you take away the deductions. we're going to get to that. the first half. lowering the tax rates. does that cost $5 trillion? >> no. >> the master of the power point was having a hard time making a point. let's break down what paul ryan is actually saying here. romney and ryan will give $5 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthiest americans. subtract an unspecified amount of money of unnamed deductions. somehow you're going to get a revenue neutral tax plan. it's a plan so bogus not even a fox news host can understand it. >> you haven't given me the math. >> i don't have the -- it would take me too long

versus ryan. if you're advising the vice president, because he's got a lot of ground work to make up for it here out of that first debate for their ticket, what do you tell him? >> i'd say to joe biden, be yourself, because biden has a unique way of bringing reality into these very substantive conversations. and i'll use big bird as an example, and we're sort of making a joke, and yes, it gives people laughter, but there's something very serious about this issue. i mean, the "sesame street" programming, pbs programming has been in -- i worked in education for a number of years -- the gold standard, not just here in the united states, around the world, recognized as a gold standard in children's education. at a time when kids in our country, not enough of them can actually read proficiently, what sense does it make to cut? i mean, we're not going to balance that $5 trillion hole by getting rid of big bird. that's what i think part of reminding people about big bird does, how ridiculous the rhetoric from the romney/ryan campaign is, but also the idea that, so, you're going to cut somet

impact just because paul ryan and joe biden are very aggressive debaters. we are going to see vice president biden go after paul ryan for the ryan budget that has been a big deal on capitol hill in the last four years. paul ryan will certainly defend his views on this. we will probably see some more sparks than in the first debate. >>shepard: one thing that governor romney has been criticized from both sides of the aisle, he didn't have specifics on a budget plan, and in came paul ryan as a vice presidential candidate, and the word was, well, not all of those specifics. it seems like they will have to put a laser on that. >>guest: that is what palm ryan will -- what paul ryan will do. but he is broad in his thinking and they don't not want him to get specific. that is what biden will push on. paul ryan may not have those answers. >>shepard: time will tell, the day after tomorrow. today, sandusky learned his punishment for raping little boys but first he had a chance to speak to the court. he reminded us what you need to do is blame the victims. because it is their fault, after all.

. if it had gone well, he could have attacked ryan and romney. now he has to defend the president. >> well, i disagree completely because here's the problem with that. this mitt romney's the same mitt romney that we've known for the last six or seven months, the same mitt romney that voters very cautious with the last six or seven months. it's not about defending the president, it's about taking the fight to mitt romney making them defend, that fantasy show he put on during the other debate where he made stuff up and didn't know his own tax plan, making them stick to what they've been the last six or seven months. >> this is where i think paul ryan will have pressure on him and where i expect paul ryan to perform very well. i mean, i found obama's debate performance totally lacking in specifics. we still don't know what his tax plan is or his deficit plan or his budget plan. but paul ryan has become the personification for the democrats of all that is callous and cold and evil about the romney campaign. so ryan now has i think an opportunity to not only explain his plan more importantly romne
